Patches donated blood the other day, to a kitty that didn't have enough. I brought Patches and Goyle to my work, figuring Goyle would be the better donor because he's a bit bigger and hardier, and would probably tolerate anesthesia better than Patches. We drew a small amount of blood from both cats an blood typed them. (Yes, cats have blood types too.) Patches was an "A", the most common of feline blood types, and the type of blood we needed.
Goyle came up AB. AB? we ran the test again. Again, it came up AB. Though I'd never heard of it happening, and certainly never seen it, the other tech I was working with had heard of it, though it was very rare (13/9,239 cats; 0.14% frequency), and she'd never seen it before. So my little odd cat even has odd blood. Unusable, really, except maybe for other AB cats.
One bit of research i read showed that it shows up occasionally in the British Shorthair breed, which we have always thought may be part of Goyle's ancestry, with his big eyes, cobby body, and stubby face.
Anyway, Patches donated blood without complications, though it was sad to see her under anesthesia. We took 60ml (2 oz., 1/8 cup) of blood from her, and i think it made a nicer cat of her. She was still super-affectionate afterward, but calmer. And she didn't seem to resent me for the bloodletting.
Michael and i saw Closer the other night. Good movie, but painful to watch ... hard to watch people have these way-too-real fights, throwing lines at each other that i've heard and used before. Natalie Portman's character was great.
So the cable guy came to my house yesterday and proved the point that i've been trying to make all along - that my connectivity problems are the fault of the cable modem and not my computer. So i have a shiny new modem, and new cable lines, and everything works just fine now. I'm a happy, happy girl.
I go to work tonight. I don't want to. I want to knit and watch movies, dammit.
