Saturday, after work, i went to assist in scattering the ashes of Chou Chou, a patient of ours who recently died. Chou Chou's parents took me and an obnoxious receptionist out on their yacht, and we went out from Los Angeles harbor to scatter his ashes at a certain spot. I took a little video with my camera of the sea lions that swam along side the boat for a while. This is more a test to see if I can get this video upload thing to work.
The crazy shrieking lady with the accent you can hear is Chou Chou's mom.
Two hours of sleep, and then i'm off to work again last night, where i was one of the most horrible cases I've ever seen. Two-year old chihuahua, shot in the face. Owner was (and this is the story the owner told us, not necessarily the story any of us believed) cleaning his gun when it went off. The bullet went through the wall and hit the dog in the face in the next room.
This dog's face was ... for lack of a better word, fucked.
Skull x-rays are complicated, so here's a brief walkthrough ... that lower jaw should be a smooth line. Not the many pieces it is in this picture.
The owner, after a phone consultation with his ex-girlfriend that gave him the dog, agreed to relinquish the dog. SD and I worked all night to keep her pain under control until the surgeon could evaluate her in the morning - the hope being that part of her jaw could be removed and allow her lo lead a normal comfortable life in a new home.
The surgeon recommended euthanasia. The damage too extensive, the odds of a comfortable life minimal.
SD called me while I was on my way home to tell me about the consultation and her euthanasia. I didn't get horribly attached to this dog - the idea of a humane euthanasia was at the front of our minds through the night. But we wanted to give her at least the certainty of an expert opinion before letting her die because of a stupid human's action.
Not to say that I wasn't sad, though. It's been a depressing weekend.
I'm not going to school today, and i don't have to work. I'm going to kick around my house, snuggle my cats, try and find the happy things.
