the fifth season

Kitten season officially began this week at the shelter ... they've started coming in, in crates, in shoeboxes, by well-meaning people who think that we will save them, take the dozens hundreds thousands of kittens home, and line them up to bottle feed them, then find wonderful loving forever homes.

The reality is that there aren't enough homes, not enough time, not enough resources ... more kittens than bottles and hands. We don't even foster out bottle babies right now, there are so many kittens between 5-8 weeks old that need fosters that even that much overwhelms our foster resources.

The reality is that kittens are killed, daily. Because people refuse to spay and neuter their animals, or to put any money towards trap-neuter-release programs.

Kitten season has begun.

oh, K., I am soooooo sorry you have to be there for this part of shelter life :( I know it makes your heart ache. **hugs**

I wish that people could be required by LAW to spay and neuter their animals until the worlds domestic animal population is more under control :(

At least there is, IMO, one positive thing:: at least they are bringing them in to the shelter, and not just tossing them out in the streets to die of disease, and starvation or be hit by cars...we won't even mention the freaks out there who like to harm animals...

**hugs again**

That law did not pass this year. We tried. :(

The breeders showed up and won.

I personally hate the general category of people called "breeders".

I guess the only thing we can do at this point is keep getting that law up for annual reconsideration :(

*hugs* to you ~ Stay strong K.,~~ I don't know if I would be able to do your job at this time of year, yet you're stronger than me

Is there somewhere that has a trap-neuter-release program that I can cut a check to?

Thats whats kept me from applying to a shelter for work before now, though at this point I'm steeled up for it.

There is a TNR activity local to me that I'm going to start working Wednesdays at called "Fixnation", once I'm ready to do inductions at the rate of about one every six minutes, from the sound of it.

I've already had one of my wifes friends give us five kittens they found in a planter in front of their sound stage. It was heartbreaking enough to lose my favorite out of the bunch to what was apparently sudden onset Pneumonia, but the other four are doing well. I got a home lined up for two of them and the other two are staying with me - though obviously I can't do that more than once. Well, twice, actually, but now I got four cats. And none of these ever made it to the shelter, I got them all directly.

I am sorry to hear about one of them not making it, yet this was a happy ending story overall

Thank you for being so wonderful and helping those babies get homes :)
